Great mystery. Told from a couple of perspectives - past and present - and the killer and the police. This is a difficult book to say to much about without giving away the plot - so I'll just say that strange murders start occurring and the police have no clues. The characters are interesting - and the story pulls you in.A British investigator with a personal history laden with murder and deceit has a stellar career for getting into the heads of killers and solving crimes. But this serial killer outwits him and his crack team, perhaps because he is the second coming of Christ and God is on his side? Or perhaps because he has other means of evading capture?
Great story with several twists and turns along the way. Recommend this to any who likes a really good mystery that keeps you guessing until the end.
I remember reading this a few years back and being highly entertained by the story. I haven't read it in a long time, but I seem to recall thinking while I read that I had the "whodunnit" figured out, and then of being convinced that I was wrong, and then of being shown that I had been right all along... I'm sure that somewhere the author was chuckling about that. But that's ok... I like my thrillers to tease me a little bit. The only reason this did not get 4 stars, though, is that I remember
I do love this book. The detective story is excellent and while it is very "Noughties", it still reads very well. The use of present tense is also a nice touch - as I often find books written in this format jarring, but it works well here.
I first read this when it was published nearly 20 years ago. I loved it then and still think it is an amazing debut novel. Two brothers, both damaged in some way. One becomes a policeman and has to investigate an increasingly violent and gory series of murders. For months he and his team are stranded with no idea what is going on, until a random meeting with an old friend leads to the clues he needs. The violence is horrible, I am pretty sure that I had no idea of the ending when I first read
Whoever gave this book under 3 stars need to read it again especially 1* comments shocking
