Poetry is often a vehicle for releasing emotion and stating an opinion on the world around us. When done well it can touch the human soul. The passions of the poet can be admired, but as important is the craft of the writing.Small collections are particularly hard to do well as there is greater demand for each poem to be as good as the other. This a thought that holds weight with this collection. A short read that raises plenty of emotion and thought for readers of any race. There is a sense of highlighting perceptions and a strong militant like presence that echoes through the collection. The struggles of the black community and the prejudices are greatly felt. Self awareness of the culture and differences from other races are also highlighted.
With such strong sentiments the collection often falls into muse like observations, which though causing a pause for reflection are not as strong as the more poetical pieces of writing. Whereas the shorter poems feel like thoughts of the poet the longer poems make a better point and dominate proceedings.
As is often the case a better selection of poems and further expansion of themes would greatly improve this collection. Focused passion being a key word to remember for the poet. Though a short read with room for improvement it is a worthy read overall.

It's Time to Wake Up is a short collection; a book of only 22 pages. While reading, I could only imagine the amount of pain and anger the writer must have felt to put all those feelings into words. In some of the poems, she talks about why anyone should feel they are better, if they have lighter skin. In others, she asks members of her own race to embrace who they are - their skin, their hair, their bodies - and not blindly imitate others because that is someone else's idea of beauty.
