Narrative As Books Marie Antoinette

Every few years the public becomes enamored with the story of Marie Antoinette (1755-93), the Austrian royal sent at the age of fourteen to France to marry the young prince who reigned as Louis XVI, and her time has come again. Hilaire Belloc's entertaining biography--an overlooked gem, according to a recent Amazon review--is sympathetic yet fair to the red-headed, intelligent, and arduous queen who lost her head to a guillotine. Her chance friendships failed not in mere disappointments but in ruin; her lapses of judgment betrayed her not to stumbling but to an abyss, writes Belloc, the prolific French-British author of many works of history, biography, and books for children.

EXCELLENT

Interesting, but hard to get through.

This was the first Marie Antoinette book I ever read. I was in tenth grade and simply interested in who she was. I found her life both remarkable and tragic. Her marriage was a joke. I personally believe Louis XVI was a homosexual. He didn't consummate his marriage for 7 years, he had no mistress, yet he liked to wrestle with his blacksmith companion???This book can really be taken as two acts. The first, a young girl set in the middle of such extravagance. The second, a woman and mother facing

Written by the great Christian thinker and historian, Hilaire Belloc, this book was an excellent companion to another biography I read of Marie Antoinette. Belloc paints a very detailed picture of the political climate as well as the religious climate in France at the time of the Revolution ... both which had much to do with what led to the eventual regicide practiced against Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. He details also the political climate in Austria prior to and after the birth of Marie

Very informative! The professional reviews are on par. Normally nonfiction seems dry to me, and "too much." But this one was lovely and very interesting. I learned a lot about the queen that I did not know before. Would recommend to any fans of Marie Antoinette's history as well as any fans of Sofia Coppola's movie.

Joseph Hilaire Pierre René Belloc was an Anglo-French writer and historian who became a naturalised British subject in 1902. He was one of the most prolific writers in England during the early twentieth century. He was known as a writer, orator, poet, satirist, man of letters, and political activist. He is most notable for his Catholic faith, which had a strong impact on most of his works and his
