A short and excellent overview of a very important, if at first glance simple, idea. Concludes with an unexpected, and highly thoughtful, synopsis of what a functioning socialism might like look.

Powerful. Short and to the point. Need to read his longer books to get more detail on how the author thinks.

A relevant argument for our time: that disobedience is the essence of what it means to be human, and is the driver of all history.

"On Disobedience" reads like a cliffnotes version of "Escape from Freedom", both books cover similar topics but "On Disobedience" barely scratches the surface in it's 100~ish pages. It is a quick read and ends with a fairly solid promotion of the US Socialist Party from the 70s (It is not a promotion of the current Socialist Parties in the US, but a reflection on Fromm's personal thoughts of the Socialist Party from the 70s which he had experience with and agreed with their humanist approach.It

I really didnt connect with this book. It really reads like a piece written at the height of the Cold War by a male academic philosopher (which, to be fair, it is), but for that very reason is rather opaque. The exception might be the closing chapter where Fromm discusses what a transition to a socialist state might look like for America, which lent some concrete strategies to his theories.I do find it a bit hilarious/disturbing that in 1981 the author was deeply concerned about political

I initially picked up this book because of the arrestining cover and title. Its a pretty succinct collection of essays that you could read in a couple hours. The writing is arresting and moves you along pretty efficiently.In the context of our current political environment it presents some especially timely ideas. The first essay introduces disobedience. Fromm constantly defines freedom as the capacity for disobedience, and with that is courage. This relationship is contrary to what one is
