The conclusion to Saberhagen's epic is both thought-provoking and frustrating, wonderfully creative and slightly shallow. It's a very good capstone to the trilogy, but suffers from some of the same flaws and challenges of the early volumes.All of the conflicts are coming out into the open, with the Dark King taking control of the Mindsword ready to conquer the world. The Silver Queen stands against him, with Soulcutter at her command. Kind Sir Andrew fights to keep his people free of both,

If you have fond memories of this series back when you read them (way back then), you are better off leaving them there, like I didn't.

After re-reading the first two, now that I am more than double the age I was when I originally read them, I figured I should wrap up the trilogy. It wouldn't take long -- a couple more hours?It was ok. The idea of the 12 swords is great! The hazy mixture of gods and fantasy and science fiction is... decent? The writing is pretty blah. The characters are pretty much nonexistent. I can remember when I was 12 or 13, reading this, and the romance between Mark and Kristen was so thrilling, and so sad

The epic scope and ideas of this book are great, though Saberhagen's writing (and particularly his plotting) doesn't always live up to it.

A good ending volume for this series. There are several moment where I said to myself "oh, that's why that happened earlier". At the end, we know enough to fill in the blanks that are never quite spelled out. I've heard the sword books kind of go downhill from here, so I don't plan on going on.



Book ends with some questions, but just enough to have some closure.
