4.5This is the series that got me into fantasy and I am grateful for that! It has been so much fun revisiting this after such a long time reading count: 8 (pre Goodreads days)

I initially wanted to give this book a four-star rating but I find, on reflection, that there are some things that are really well done in this new series. I also appreciate that my 11 year-old son, who read this book with me, was engaged throughout. He loved the humor, the plot twists, and the intelligence of the (female) protagonist. I can't remember why I added this to my to-read list (probably the surprisingly high score?), but I read it. It's nothing special until things start to go wrong, around page 100 so the set-up is long and tedious. After that, it's a pretty good ride.
