What a beautiful story of a women's strength and perseverance. Ana, the main character, is faced with bigotry, sexism, and injustice, but she also knows who she is and what is right. I also learned a lot about Puerto Rico at the turn of the century, although Eleanor Parker Sapia's writing is so fluid and engaging that the history lesson was perfectly integrated into a story that I never wanted to put down. What a fascinating story! A Decent Woman takes the reader on a journey into the heat and steam of Puerto Rico in the early 1900s. After the terribly snotty Towers of Trebizond, I was prepared to fall in love with this book. Alas. I came across this book while searching for something to read that would keep me locked in. The cover attracted me because I knew who this saint was and all of her manifestations. Having just lost my mother, who was born and raised in Santa Isabel, and had family in Ponce, I was intrigued. Another town in this book, Rio Canas, kept me reading for that is where my paternal grandparents lived. This story is well written and particularly vivid for me because I know this part of the island of Puerto

4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book. I loved the peek into historical and cultural viewpoints. It was also interesting to get a perspective on early midwifery. I did take off a half-star because I was jarred when it went into Serafina's viewpoint (I really wanted to stay in Ana's head). However, I'm giving the author huge props for writing such a detailed history inspired by true events.
