Interpretation Conducive To Books The Hermit
In his only novel, the celebrated dramatist has chosen as his main character a man who is both utterly banal yet strangely touched with grace, a lowly clerk who is none-the-less prey to luminous visions. At 35 he quits the "rat-race" thanks to an unexpected inheritance and devotes himself to his secret passion: observing and meditating on the human condition. "It may well be" wrote the French critic François Nourissier in Le Point, "that in a few years we will come to realize that The Hermit is one of the essential works of our time, probing and detailing the illness of our century.Specify Books In Pursuance Of The Hermit

"What was it that I lacked? I wanted to know everything. That's what was missing: the fact that I didn't know. The fact that I didn't know everything. I was ignorant, but not enough for me to realize that I was. What about the scholars and wise men: do they know something? And if they do, is it enough for them? What else is there? Maybe the trees know more. Animals know a lot. I hadn't tried very hard, because I felt that it was impossible to know what I wanted to know. When I came to thatThis was a fantastic book. Like his plays, Ionesco's only novel is bleak and alienating, yet often funny as hell. A bit like Camus with a sense of humor.

A meditation on the fate of a young-ish man who comes into an inheritance that enables him to live a leisurely life in Paris. Even though he constantly intends to look up friends and stay involved after he quits his miserable job, he never acts on his intentions and instead drifts into a not unpleasant life of dining at the same restaurant every day, drinking copious quantities of brandy and wine, and sleeping his life away mostly. Some things do happen to him; he does get involved with a woman.
Reminded me a lot of a creep I used to date.
My only exposure to Ionesco (prior to this novel) was reading and almost performing in "The Bald Soprano" (some stuff came up my senior year in high school, and we never got the production off the ground), and reading an interview with Zero Mostel about performing in "The Rhinocerous". So basically, not enough to have formed a strong expectation, but enough so that I felt aptly prepared to deal with any of his absurdist tendancies as I began to read his one and only novel, "The Hermit".It wasn't
