It looks like most of the five-star reviews for this book came from people who either knew the author or who read the book as children, and I can certainly understand that. If I had read this at a young age, I think I would have treasured it.

Reading it for the first time in my 40s, however, I can only say that it's an entertaining children's book, full of wholesome people making admirable decisions. It's easy to see Jasper as a Mayberry-like setting where positive life lessons unfold daily.

At the same time, the book is very much a product of the 70s (and earlier) in the way it portrays childhood and the wonderfully reckless neglect of parents. This isn't just "Go outside and play." This is go outside and play and ride ponies to points unknown, and if you come back wet and hungry or beaten and bloody... "Well, son, I'd sure hate to see the other guy."

My favorite was one particularly dangerous (though thrilling) acivity the kids engaged in over the course of a couple of chapters, the second of which ended with some version of "It was all fun and games until somebody's little brother got killed. Then we decided never to do that dangerous thing again."

One final thing I'll note is the appearance of real-life sports writer Jimmy Smothers, the recently deceased editor of the Gadsden Times. I wish I had read the book a couple of years earlier so I could ask Mr. Smothers about his relationship with the author. The scene itself had an air of truth about it, and I wouldn't be surprised if it were pulled from one of his own experiences.

This is one of my all-time favorite books.(And if anyone out there has contact with the Burton family, please let me know!)

I read this book when I was 11 or 12 and loved it! I was a tom-boy. I'm not sure how well girls that age would like it. I think they stopped publishing this book. Although I hold a copy near and dear to my hear (my husband gave it to me while we were dating). It's about a boy named Dixie who is traveling with the circus (his parents have died). He decides to skip the circus and live in a far-off town. He finds a house and ends up living in it. Dixie pretends to have parents living with him so

Coach Burton was an awesome man and friend of the family. I am very proud of the signed copy that I have.

Great book. I was first exposed to this book in elementary school by my fifth grade teacher Miss. Hice . Loved it then. then read it as an adult on my own. I guess I'm partial to it because it's set in my home town of Jasper, Alabama. But it's still a great book. For kids and adults.



I have had this book since I was a child. The copy I have is signed by Herbert Burton, made out to me :-) . I loved it when I was young, and it still brought me to tears when I read it again today. Wonderful, inspirational stories like this need to be shared world wide. I would recommend this book to people of all ages..
