Narrative As Books The Path She Trod
What a bitter sweet memorial to Mary Brunette Foster -- a young Presbyterian missionary who died giving birth to her first child while serving the Lord in Gabon, West Africa in the late 1800s. Of personal interest to me is the mention of my great-great grandparents, Graham and Laura Campbell, who were also serving as missionaries at a nearby post. The spirit and determination of these young couples to leave the comforts of North America to seek out the natives and introduce them to Christianity is sometimes hard to fathom. Many of us grew up with the stories of pioneering families -- the Little House books in particular -- but here we have an account of the same era but in an absolutely different world altogether. The Fosters and Campbells travel by river boat, are plagued with fevers and are sometimes visited by rude French officials. They struggle with building their outposts, maintaining stable relations with neighboring native chiefs, keeping the hired help happy, and themselves fed and healthy. There are tearful moments in this memorial but I loved the story dearly.
